Under the glow of the New York City skyline, a dedicated group of individuals gathered for an unforgettable evening at the Wall Street Warriors social event. We had shared purpose: to fight the suicide crisis within the military community.

This was the second year that we hosted this event, led by Co-chairs, Donato Cuttone, and Bill Beatty, along with our New York City Executive Leadership Team. Attendees included donors, suicide prevention advocates, military leaders, loss surviving families and supporters. We all brought unique perspective, lived experiences, and expertise to the table but have a unifying mission to reduce the military suicide rate.

Over the past two years, this event has raised nearly $1 million of life-saving funds in support of our work to provide suicide-specific care to veterans and service members when they are in their darkest moments. The funds are also helping us better understand the suicide crisis through our groundbreaking research initiative, Black Box Project.

A Mission That Unites Us All

The evening opened with powerful words from our Chief Development Officer, Kathy Kaufmann, who reminded everyone of the significance of their presence with us:

“Tonight, as I look out at this room, I am filled with inspiration and a profound sense of hope. Hope that is made possible by every person here who stands shoulder-to-shoulder with us to remember, honor, and advance our life-saving mission."
Kathy Kaufmann, Chief Development Officer of Stop Soldier Suicide

The Manhattan College ROTC then presented our nation's colors, which was followed by a toast to our heroes. Sandi Riffle, Vice President, Corporate Communications, Events & Community Giving of Tailored Brands and the proud daughter of a military veteran, led us in that toast and shared the following:

“We share a profound responsibility: to remember those we’ve lost, to honor the courage of those who serve, and to advance meaningful solutions so that no family has to endure the heartbreak of suicide ever again.”
Sandi Riffle, Tailored Brands Vice President, Corporate Communications, Events & Community Giving

Sandi’s words grounded the evening in pride and gratitude for those who have served.

Moments of Honor and Inspiration

Phil Downer served as our keynote speaker and delivered heartfelt remarks that resonated deeply. Phil is a Marine veteran who served in Viet Nam and his company is the one depicted in the award-winning movie, Full Metal Jacket. Phil’s words challenged and inspired us, reminding everyone that hope can be rebuilt and that each of us has a role to play in reaching those who are struggling. He spoke to the critical and life-saving role of connection and affirmed how Stop Soldier Suicide is on the front lines of solving this crisis in both our response with ROGER Wellness Service and our groundbreaking data initiative, Black Box Project.

A panel of five experts and advocates followed, offering valuable insight into the realities of suicide prevention within the military community. Their perspectives — drawn from lived experience, research, and advocacy — underscored both the progress that’s been made and the work that remains. The panel was moderated by Joe Zidle who is a veteran, a steadfast supporter of Stop Soldier Suicide, and a respected leader within the financial industry.
